The Committee notes that there are immense challenges ahead if the UK is to achieve sustainable development approach which balances the need for economic and social progress with environmental concerns. The Committee's report reviews the progress being made by government departments to place environmental concerns or 'green government' at the centre of policy making and operational management decisions. It draws on the departmental responses to an annual questionnaire on the topic contained in the document 'Sustainable development in government: first annual report' published in November 2002. A number of conclusions and recommendations are made regarding staff resources, greening policy and operations, monitoring and reporting, audit and accountability issues.
